Set in a medieval world, Rowan, a knight, must set out on a quest for the Embercleft Sword, locked away at Ashen Keep. The blade possess’ the final shard of star metal, the only blade capable of cutting through Malgarin’s evil magic.

Sword and Shield Exploration
After conducting this design exploration, I felt that the swords felt too much like daggers, and so when working on the final design, I played with the proportions so that it felt sleeker in proportion to the character.
Rowan Armor Design Sheet
A lot of the armor I saw at the Met incorporated delicate paisley motifs; I wanted to include that imagery into Rowan’s shoulder guard. I really liked the juxtaposition of something so delicate on something so strong.

I’ve been working on this painting for a few days. Right now the colors are blocked in, but I wanted to capture an eerie and tense feeling as Rowan sets out to face off against Malgarin, and retake Ashen Keep.
